apparently the instruction: “hold test tube in bunsen burner just until the chemical barely melts and then remove immediately”, actually means: “hold the test tube in the bunsen burner until the chemical melts completely, boils, turns black, burns, smokes and blows the bottom of the test tube out.”
and the instruction: “Hold the penny in the bunsen burner just until it turns to a yellow colour (no longer than 20 seconds), then remove immediately and plunge into cold water to cool”, actually means either: “Hold the penny in the bunsen burner until it melts and drips hot molten metal all over the lab desk” or, “Hold the penny in the bunsen burner until it turns a yellow colour, remove it, and walk about the room with your now BLAZING HOT penny!”
ugh.
There must be a story here…
